A fake Facebook advertisement promoting a credit card has allegedly resulted in a cyber fraud in which a 69-year-old Noida resident lost ₹7.80 lakh. The Cyber Crime Police Station has registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident.

Credit card fraud linked to a fake Facebook advertisement that caused a Noida resident to lose ₹7.80 lakh in an online banking scam.

According to the complaint, Rajesh Sareen, a resident of Prateek Fedora Society in Sector 61, came across the fraudulent credit card advertisement on Facebook on May 18, 2025. Soon afterward, he received a WhatsApp call from a person claiming to represent the bank, who offered to complete the application process by sharing an online form.

During the process, the fraudsters allegedly obtained the victim’s sensitive banking information and internet banking credentials. Using these details, they transferred ₹7.80 lakh from his three savings accounts through four separate internet banking transactions. The amount included withdrawals of ₹3 lakh, ₹2.27 lakh, ₹53,000, and an additional transfer of ₹2 lakh.

After discovering the unauthorized transactions, the victim immediately reported the incident through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal before filing an FIR with the Cyber Crime Police Station. Investigators are examining beneficiary bank accounts, mobile numbers, digital payment trails, and other electronic evidence to trace those responsible.

The case underscores the growing threat of fake social media advertisements used to impersonate trusted financial institutions and steal sensitive banking information. Experts advise people to apply for financial services only through official websites, mobile applications, or authorized branches, and to never share internet banking credentials, OTPs, CVV numbers, or other confidential financial details through unsolicited calls, links, or online forms.
