Telegram’s t[.]me domain has been placed under serverHold status by the .me registry, making it unavailable through the global Domain Name System (DNS). The move has rendered all t[.]me short links inaccessible worldwide, affecting channel invitations, message-sharing URLs, and web previews.

Telegram's t.me domain affected by serverHold status, causing worldwide disruption to channel invitation links and web previews.

According to WHOIS records, the domain now carries several registry status flags, including serverHold, clientDeleteProhibited, and serverDeleteProhibited. The registration remains valid until May 2035, and the domain continues to point to Google Cloud name servers, confirming that neither expiration nor DNS delegation is responsible for the outage. Instead, the restriction has been imposed at the registry level, which takes precedence over registrar and DNS provider settings.

A serverHold status differs from a clientHold action issued by registrars for routine administrative matters. It is applied only by the domain registry and is generally associated with situations involving legal proceedings, suspected abuse, fraud investigations, compliance requirements, or security-related concerns. As of now, Telegram, the .me registry, and Identity Digital have not released an official explanation, leaving the reason behind the action unknown.

Despite the widespread failure of t[.]me links, Telegram’s primary messaging platform continues to operate normally, with no significant application-level outages reported by independent monitoring services. The disruption appears to be confined to the platform’s link-shortening and web-preview services. Industry practices suggest that restoring normal operations could take anywhere from a few hours to several days, depending on how quickly the underlying issue is addressed.

The development underscores the importance of domain governance in digital operations. Even when core infrastructure remains unaffected, a registry-level restriction can interrupt access to critical online services. For organizations, the incident highlights the value of business continuity planning, alternative communication channels, and resilient digital infrastructure to minimize operational disruption.
