“THE IMPACT OF 5G NETWORKS ON CYBERSECURITY”

Introduction:

After the 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G global wireless standard networks, 5G a new global wireless standard was launched very recently. 5G has the capability to connect almost everything (such as machines, devices and objects) together virtually. 5G wireless technology delivers data at higher speeds. This is the most innovative aspect of 5G technology as well as cybersecurity, i.e., it transmits data and communicates approximately three times faster than 4G.

In addition to this it also has increased availability, more reliability, ultra-low latency, massive network capacity, thus providing an overall user experience to more users. In this blog we’ve discussed the impact of 5G networks on cyber security, whether positive or negative. First you’ll see the important applications of 5G technology in various fields, followed by the risks it has on cybersecurity and then the positive impacts.

Features of 5G:

Here we’ve listed a few most common and important features of the 5G technology that you must know:

  1. It is faster, more capable and more reliable.
  2. It has a high network transmission speed thus enabling more devices to connect and run simultaneously.
  3. This feature of 5G technology renders a huge positive impact on individuals, industries and enterprises.
  4. It can empower IoT (Internet of Things) thus enabling the development of autonomous vehicles and smart cities.

Now let’s see how these features of 5G technology make it more vulnerable to cybersecurity threats.

How 5G network is more vulnerable to cybersecurity threats?

As we go through the features of 5G technology, we can easily understand that the highly network-dependent activity and the huge critical infrastructure and AI involved increases the risk of cyber threats. Let’s see how 5G is vulnerable to cybersecurity.

With the high level of connectivity offered by 5G and the expanded bandwidth, the threats of cyber attacks become extremely vulnerable and hence advanced approaches to cybersecurity should be implemented to deal with such threats. 5G emphasizes on digital-routing. It is less centralised and more hardware-based. This is what weakens the systems and networks and hence cybercriminals can exploit them.

5G promises to be faster, with more capacity and reliability. It will improve network transmission speeds and allow more devices to connect and run concurrently. This has far-reaching implications for industry and business, as well as for individual users. 5G will play an important role in powering the internet of things (IoT) and enabling the development of smart cities and self-driving cars. However, with so much critical infrastructure and AI involved, as well as so much network-dependent activity, 5G will inevitably change the nature of cyber threats and the demands of cybersecurity. The same characteristics of 5G that make it beneficial to users and networks also make it more vulnerable and vulnerable to cyber threats.

• Malicious hackers could use 5G’s much faster speeds to easily infiltrate personal devices. • As IoT expands, this infiltration could extend to cars, security systems, and even pacemakers.

• As more critical infrastructure becomes operational, cyberterrorists or cybercriminals may target utilities and transportation systems.

Total connectivity necessitates novel approaches to network and cybersecurity. A completely connected world is inherently more vulnerable to cyberattacks. There are several ways in which 5G is more vulnerable to cyber threats. The network is much less centralised and hardware-based, with a greater emphasis on digital routing via software and a greater reliance on standard protocols and building blocks. These are the methods used by malicious cybercriminals to exploit system and network flaws.

How 5G network is advantageous to cybersecurity?

Now that you see the negative impacts of 5G on cybersecurity, let us tell you that 5G is also helpful in improving it. 5G network ensures best utilization of cybersecurity infrastructure mainly through real-time threat detection, secured data transmission and enhanced network security. Since the 5G technology is new, its deployment in businesses is expensive and lengthy. 5G solutions offer long-term economic benefits and they’re also going to increase the service offerings anytime in the near future. With the growth of 5G, cybersecurity solutions are now improving network security through IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) encryption.

Additionally, 5G ensures maximum data protection as all data sent is encrypted, integrated, protected and authenticated. 5G contributes immensely to the deployment of cloud computing, AI, IoT, etc. It combines software and hardware devices into a single unit, and deep packet inspection (DPI). DPI is used in inspecting the data that has to be sent over a network of computers.

Conclusion:

Here we can conclude that in terms of its impact on cybersecurity, 5G is a powerful tool. It has the capability to speed-up the process of identification of cyber threats. This will further boost up faster data downloads, data analysis and effective communication between organizations at a global level. Though 5G is very advantageous to networks, at the same time we can’t entirely ignore the fact that the same qualities of 5G are the one that put these networks at higher risks from cyber threats.
