10th January – Born in the village of Melakattuvilai in Tamil Nadu, Dr. V. Narayanan grew up in a family with limited resources. His parents, a farmer and a homemaker, instilled in him the value of hard work and education. Hi school years were challenging, as their home did not have electricity until he was in Class IX, but his academic excellence shone through, making him the Class X topper.
Despite facing financial difficulties, his determination and passion for learning were unwavering. His exceptional performance in school led him to pursue a career in aerospace engineering, earning a Ph.D. and contributing to ISRO’s propulsion technologies. Over the years, he played a key role in advancing cryogenic engines and electric propulsion systems, important for ISRO’s most significant space missions.
His leadership journey at ISRO began with his involvement in critical projects that established India’s space capabilities. As the Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, he was instrumental in developing propulsion systems that enhanced the reliability and efficiency of ISRO’s launch vehicles. His work on the GSLV Mk III rocket, which was instrumental in the Chandrayaan-3 mission, cemented his reputation as a leading space technologist.
Now, as the Chairman of ISRO, he is poised to lead the organization through its next era of groundbreaking missions, including the Gaganyaan manned mission, lunar exploration, and the development of India’s own space station. His leadership is expected to bring a fresh perspective to ISRO’s ambitious goals, positioning India as a significant player in the global space race.
